The Los Angeles Angels will have to make do without one of their top options at third base.
According to a report from Francys Romero, switch-hitter Yoan Moncada requires surgery on his right knee. Romero did not specify the details of the surgery the 31-year-old will undergo.
"Moncada seemingly never fully recovered from the right knee issue that cost him five weeks last summer. The veteran switch-hitter said the injury most severely impacted him when he would bat from the right side," Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors wrote Monday.
"The Angels accordingly limited him to 26 plate appearances versus lefty pitching this year. That wasn’t enough to avoid an IL stint, nor apparently to stave off surgery."
This is Moncada's second season with the Angels after making his debut in 2016 with the Boston Red Sox, who quickly sent him to the Chicago White Sox that winter in the trade that sent left-hander Chris Sale to Boston.

In 41 games, Moncada hit .189/.308/.297 with just three home runs and 10 RBIs. He is far removed from hitting a career-high 25 homers with the White Sox in 2019.
While Moncada is out, the Angels have Donovan Walton, Oswald Peraza, and the recently promoted Denzer Guzman as options at the hot corner.
