Wrestling Sectional Tournament: Waynedale earns team sectional title

Over the weekend, sectional wrestling tournaments took place across the state of Ohio. Here's a recap of the results involving Wayne/Holmes County schools.

Division I Northeast Tournament at Massillon Perry

Wooster placed fourth overall in the team standings with 154 points, as Massillon Perry won the sectional title with 294.5 points.

Wooster's Vincenzo Peretti (runner-up at 126), Owen Zidron (runner-up at 120), Brayden Burns (5th at 106), Jalyn Flinders (5th at 144) and Brant Barnard (runner-up at 165) all advanced as individual qualifiers to next week's district tournament.

Division II Northeast Tournament at Northwest Fieldhouse

Orrville placed 10th overall (58.5 points) at Saturday's sectional tournament, as Woodridge took the sectional team title.

Orrville's Sylus Welsh (3rd at 138) and Owen Landis (5th at 215) both advanced to the district tournament.

Division II East Tournament at Steubenville

Ohio Cardinal Conference runners-up and third-place finishers at the OHSWCA Division III State Team Duals Championships in February, West Holmes finished as sectional runners-up (210 points) behind first-place Beaver (226 points).

West Holmes had 13 district qualifiers on Saturday, with senior Peyton Martin (120 pounds), senior Louden Dixion (157 pounds) and senior Camden McCluggage (190 pounds) all earning sectional titles.

Wyatt Crabb (2nd at 106), Colton Garver (4th at 113), Gabe Umstead (2nd at 126), Ian Dougherty (6th at 132), Noah Grassbaugh (5th at 144), Oliver Miller (4th at 150), Finnigan McClintock (5th at 165), Lincoln Goans (3rd at 175), Easton Ross (4th at 215) and Dylan Sours (3rd at 285) all advanced to districts.

Division III Northeast Tournament at Beachwood

Smithville finished third (149.5 points) in the team standings behind first-place Trinity (187) and host school Beachwood (182.5).

Smithville's Chase Perry (runner-up at 144), Zachary Lanneaux (runner-up at 157), Logan Smith (champion at 165), Mason Haines (champion at 175), Karsen Moore (champion at 190) and Kai Kerstetter (5th at 215) all booked their spots in next week's district tournament.

Division III Northeast Tournament at Berkshire

Hillsdale's Ethan Myers (5th at 113), Bentley Denny (runner-up at 126), Reed Meager (5th at 165) and Colt McCoy (runner-up at 215) each were individual district qualifiers.

Division III Northeast Tournament at Rootstown

Norwayne placed seventh (105 points) and Loudonville 11th (55 points) in the sectional team standings, as Crestwood won the team sectional title.

Seven individual wrestlers for Norwayne advanced to districts in Aiden Berry (4th at 106), Kyle Petty (3rd at 126), Ayden Shepard (4th at 138), Jacob Brunner (5th at 157), Cameron Hackworth (3rd at 175) and Elias Zollinger (2nd at 215).

For Loudonville, Josh Brown (5th at 126), Brayden Marotta (runner-up at 157) and Trevor Dawson (5th at 165) each qualified for districts.

Northeast III Northeast Tournament at Northwestern

This season's OHSWCA Division III State Team Duals champions and winners of the WCAL tournament for 15 years running, Waynedale earned a team sectional title by posting 296.5 points, well-ahead of second-place Tuslaw 189.5 points.

Dalton placed fourth (110.5), Northwestern fifth (93), Chippewa seventh (77), Triway eighth (75) and Rittman tied for ninth (48).

Waynedale produced eight individual sectional champions in Branton Tapp (106), Brock Beckler (120), Isaak Skelly (126), Sebastian Schmeltzer (132), Stephen Patterson (138), Riley Greathouse (144), Maddox Kidd (165) and Brandon Walters (285).

Also advancing to districts for Waynedale are Landen Hasseman (runner-up at 113), Dalton Oberly (3rd at 150), Lane Troyer (3rd at 157), Logan Posey (3rd at 175), Gradey Posey (runner-up at 190) and Kamden Lemon (3rd at 215).

Tuslaw produced two sectional winners win Logan Haer (157) and Guhner Eberhardt (215). Also advancing to districts for Tuslaw were Konnor Lawson (3rd at 106), Bryson Chapman (4th at 113), Colton Oaklief (3rd at 120), Phillip Renicker (4th at 126), Kaden Lawson (2nd at 132), Brent Hull (4th at 138), Chance Grim (runner-up at 144), Nathan Eberhardt (runner-up at 150), Logan Moore (5th at 165) and Kyle Allen (5th at 215).

Dalton's Aiden Pelfrey won the sectional title at 175 pounds, as Axl Ryder (3rd at 113), Ethan Houmard (runner-up at 120), Brandon Berkey (6th at 138), Karson Russell (runner-up at 157) and Sam Ediger (3rd at 165) will join him at districts.

Northwestern's Colton Morris won the sectional title at 150 pounds, while Reed Hamey (runner-up at 106), Hayden Sigler (3rd at 132), Grady Ellerbrock (4th at 144) and Gage Bias (3rd at 190) also qualified for the district tournament.

Advancing to districts for Chippewa was David King (4th at 106), Grady Lambdin (2nd at 126), Drew Nesity (4th at 132), Ben Pierce (3rd at 144) and Xavier Zollinger (5th at 157).

For Triway, Andrew Stahl (3rd at 126), Cash Coulter (6th at 132), Jonah Krupp (5th at 144), Austin Houser (runner-up at 175) and Landen Harvey (runner-up at 215) all advanced to districts.

For Rittman, Quinton Dawson (4th at 120), Braxton Wells (6th at 144), Trey Ramsier (5th at 150), Corey Winkler (4th at 190) and Gabriel Whims (5th at 215) will compete in districts.
