NFL insider reveals 3 positions to watch for Commanders in free agency

We are officially one week away from the NFL's legal tampering period. While it's officially called a negotiating window, the legal tampering period runs from Monday, March 9 until Wednesday, March 11, during NFL teams can negotiate and agree to terms with free agents from other teams.

The Washington Commanders figure to be busy next week. With over $70 million in available salary cap room, Washington will have much more when it releases cornerback Marshon Lattimore. There are other ways to create room for the Commanders if needed.

Washington has an extensive list of needs heading into next week. Without picks in the second and fourth rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft, GM Adam Peters will need to use free agency to fill many of those needs. Most agree that the Commanders need more help on defense than offense, specifically at edge rusher. All 32 NFL teams have been in Indianapolis for the past week at the 2026 NFL combine. While signings do not happen in Indianapolis, conversations do. And we begin to hear of players or positions that some teams may be interested in when free agency opens.

In their latest piece for ESPN, Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano empty their notebook with the latest combine buzz. Here's a note about what they've heard regarding the Commanders and free agency.

Expect Washington to target offensive help, among a lot of other things. When asking about the top tier of free agent running backs, tight ends and linebackers, the Commanders come up a lot.

That's a bit of a surprise. Not that the Commanders will target offensive players, but that we didn't hear the insiders mention edge rusher for Washington. That doesn't mean Peters will not target an edge rusher. He will. However, it tells you that Commanders' officials have spoken to others enough that they believe Washington will come away with a tight end, running back and linebacker.

Seeing tight end and linebacker mentioned could mean the end of Zach Ertz and Bobby Wagner in Washington. That's not a surprise, considering the Commanders' desire to get "younger and faster." Washington will likely target a pass-catching tight end, and there are options.

As for linebacker, we've mentioned Quay Walker of the Green Bay Packers as a name to watch. A cheaper, short-term option could be Eric Wilson of the Minnesota Vikings, someone new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones knows well.

Kenneth Walker III and Breece Hall are the top running back options. Hall is likely to receive the franchise tag from the New York Jets, while Walker will likely cost much more than Washington will want to pay. There are still good options available, with Tyler Allgeier of the Atlanta Falcons being a name to watch.

The Commanders were quiet during free agency last year. Don't expect the same this year.
