"We have enormous respect for Emre. That's another reason why we want to support him on his comeback journey beyond 30 June and extend his expiring contract," managing director for sport Lars Ricken told the Funke publishing house.
"Once Emre has recovered from his upcoming operation, we will sit down with him to discuss this."
Can, 32, ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee towards the end of the first half of Saturday's Bundesliga table topper against Bayern Munich.
The German international needs surgery and will be sidelined for many months, making him also miss the World Cup in summer.
Can came to Dortmund in January 2020 from Juventus and has been team captain since 2023. His current contract runs until the end of the season.
Ricken spoke of "an extremely bitter diagnosis for Emre and the whole club," naming him the "undisputed captain of our team" for years.
Dortmund are second in the Bundesliga, 11 points behind Bayern after losing the topper 3-2.
