The team announced on Wednesday that they are signing linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither.
Colts sign free agent LB Akeem Davis-Gaither
Davis-Gaither was a fourth-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL draft. He spent his first five NFL seasons there, playing under now Colts' defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.
Over his career, Davis-Gaither has appeared in 88 games and made 24 starts. He spent this most recent season with Arizona, where he made a career-high 117 tackles. In coverage, he allowed 10.9 yards per catch on 63 targets, while coming away with one interception and two pass breakups.
Davis-Gaither also brings more special teams experience to the Colts, having played 1,569 career snaps.
This was a needed addition for the Colts, who are very short on experience at the linebacker position since trading Zaire Franklin. Prior to signing Davis-Gaither, Jaylon Carlies, who has played just over 200 career defensive snaps, was the most experienced player on the Colts' roster at this position.
Adding Davis-Gaither to the mix helps raise the floor of this unit, but linebacker needs to continue to be a priority for the Colts.
