All-Star claps back, says U.S. ‘cared the most out of every team’ in WBC

San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb certainly did his part to help the United States in the World Baseball Classic. The right-hander, a two-time All-Star, won both of his starts in the tournament and allowed only one run along the way.

Yet the U.S. fell short in the championship game when their bats failed to come alive in a 3-2 loss to Venezuela.

Including Webb, the U.S. team boasted more star power than any roster in its history in the 20-year-old tournament. Yet some felt that their relatively muted celebrations reflected a dispassionate attitude toward the tournament.

Not so, said Webb, who clapped back at the popular narrative.

“I feel like there’s a narrative that we didn’t care,” Webb told reporters, including Justice De Los Santos of the San Jose Mercury News. “That’s complete bullshit. I think we probably cared the most out of every team, to be honest with you. We do things in different ways than some of the other teams, but we care a lot.”

Webb also rejected the idea that he quickly removed the runner-up medal he received from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred out of disgust.

“We were going into the clubhouse. It’s not like we were standing out there with the medal on,” he said, via Evan Webeck of the California Post. “Do I have to wear it all the way to my locker? I think that’s blown out of proportion, to be honest.”

Webb’s frustrations were easily overcome by the overall enthusiasm around the tournament in the United States and abroad. The WBC championship game averaged more than 10 million viewers on Fox and Fox Deportes, easily a record for a WBC game.
