On Saturday, North Shore Rescue were called in to help Lions Bay rescuers after the hikers, part of a group of 14 on the mountain, slipped and fell.

The trouble began when a hiker fell a “significant distance” and hurt herself, the rescue group said in a social media post. One of the hikers tried to climb down to help her but he also slipped and fell.

The woman was rescued by Lions Bay Search and Rescue members, who were able to rope their way down and give her first aid.

North Shore rescuers had to be hoisted down to the man, who was further down in steep terrain just above a waterfall.

He was treated by an emergency room doctor at the scene then hoisted out and handed off to paramedics in Lions Bay. The woman was then hoisted out and taken to hospital.

The male hiker was in critical condition as of late Saturday night.

“This was a highly technical call involving critical injuries in very steep terrain,” said North Shore Rescue, which thanked Lions Bay members for organizing the rescue and “providing excellent on-scene care for the female hiker.”

The post also credited Talon Helicopters, B.C. Emergency Health Services and staff at Lions Gate and Vancouver General hospitals for their help.
