CORTLAND — The Plattsburgh State baseball team had a golden opportunity to break a long losing streak against SUNYAC power Cortland State on Sunday.

The Cardinals (9-5, 0-3), however, couldn’t close the deal.

Plattsburgh ended up dropping a three-game set to the Red Dragons (10-6-1, 3-0) — 11-1 in seven innings and 14-8 Saturday, and 14-10 on Sunday when the Cardinals couldn’t hold a 10-8 lead in the eighth inning.

It was a tough weekend for the Cardinals’ pitching staff, which allowed a combined 39 runs in 23 innings. Cortland has now beaten Plattsburgh 42-straight times, with the last Cardinals’ win coming in 2012.

Plattsburgh will look to get back on the winning track when it plays a three-game conference set at Fredonia this coming weekend.

PLATTSBURGH 1 (7)

The story of the game was former Plattsburgh High School standout Warren Miller, who stymied the Cardinals for 6.1 innings in getting the win. The lefty allowed just two hits, two walks, one run and struck out eight while improving his record to 2-0 on the season.

The Red Dragons scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back.

Tyler Martin accounted for two of Plattsburgh’s three hits with a single, double and RBI. Marc Cancelliere added a single.

Plattsburgh got off to a great start in the contest by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. But Cortland rattled off the next 14 runs to build a 14-5 lead going to the ninth.

Talon Elkins rapped four hits, including a home run and triple, for the Red Dragons while Nolan Smith added a home run, single and four runs driven in.

Frankie Kowal, Michael Piccirillo and Ian Warren accounted for two hits each for the Cardinals, with Kowal getting a double and Warren two RBIs.

SUNDAY

CORTLAND 14

PLATTSBURGH 10

The Cardinals rallied from an 8-4 deficit to eventually take a 10-8 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.

Cortland, however, scored six runs in the inning. With runners on first and second and nobody out, Smith lofted a fly ball to shallow center where a diving attempt at making the catch couldn’t be made and went for a RBI double.

A later infield error then allowed the tying run to score, and the Red Dragons would take the lead on a two-run double and add to it with a two-run single. Three of the runs in the inning were unearned.

Smith was again a thorn in the side of the Cardinals with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs.

Kowal, Ryan Hart and Jonathan Beale rapped three hits each for Plattsburgh, while Jackson Pam and Martin added two apiece. Kowal homered and finished with four RBIs.

The Cardinals finished with 15 hits but had a rare off-game defensively with four costly errors. Plattsburgh pitchers also combined for seven walks.
