Barcelona sporting director exploring the market for ‘another Joao Cancelo’ – report

Along with the obvious objectives of reinforcing the No. 9 and centre-back positions, discussions within the FC Barcelona offices have intensified around the idea that more positions may need strengthening during the summer transfer window.

Indeed, the Blaugrana sporting director Deco believes it would be beneficial to recruit an additional full-back before the start of the next season.

And, according to SPORT, Deco is seeking a player similar to Joao Cancelo: a market opportunity who is financially accessible, given that the club is still undergoing financial restructuring.

This move is being considered independently of the future of Cancelo, who is currently on loan from Al Hilal. Hansi Flick would be pleased to continue working with the 31-year-old, who has been performing at a high level.

At the same time, the market is being looked at for another full-back. From a sporting perspective, the focus is on players who can bring experience and increase the average age of a squad currently filled with young talents.

Ideally, the player would be capable of operating on both flanks, as Cancelo does. Barcelona would prefer a naturally left-sided full-back, although being right-footed would not be a barrier.

Among the left-sided options is Alejandro Grimaldo, aged 30, who is under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until June 2027 and has not renewed.

Caio Henrique, 28, who could be nearing the end of his time at AS Monaco following this summer’s World Cup, is also an option.

Reports from Italy this week have also linked Barcelona with Andrea Cambiaso of Juventus. The 26-year-old is naturally a left-back but capable of playing on both sides. He is considered versatile and attack-minded.

Under contract until 2029, he is valued at approximately €30 million, although Juventus, currently outside the Champions League positions, may be open to lowering their asking price.

Deco and Flick believe that strengthening the squad with more experienced players will create an environment that supports the development of emerging talents, including players such as Xavi Espart, as well as others expected to step up next season.

The intention is not to hinder the progression of younger players but to support it.
