Davey Johnson is one of the most recognizable names in Mets history. In 1986, he managed a team that was on the cusp of elimination during the World Series, came back to win in the final inning of Game 6, and then went on to win a winner-take-all Game 7.
On Sept. 5, 2025, he passed away after battling a “long illness.” This season, the Mets will honor him in all of their games by wearing a “Davey” patch on the sleeve of their jerseys.

The Mets are wearing a memorial “Davey” patch on the sleeve of their jerseys this year in honor of Johnson, who passed away in September of last year. New York is also honoring the 40th anniversary of the 1986 championship season, which he orchestrated as manager.

Who is Davey Johnson?
From 1984-1990, Johnson managed the Mets, including their 1986 World Series team, which won a franchise-record 108 regular-season games. After hanging it up with the Mets, he finished with the most managerial wins in franchise history (595) and the best winning percentage (.588).
During his tenure, the Mets averaged more than 95 wins.

He cared deeply for his players both on and off the field. Some of the greatest players in our team history credit him for their successes.
