The Boston Red Sox are struggling right now. They've lost four in a row since beating the Cincinnati Reds on Opening Day, plummeting to last place in the AL East. Their starting pitching, which was supposed to be their strength, has stumbled, and their bats are ice-cold.

That said, it's only been five games. There are still 157 to go, and it's far too early for Red Sox fans to hit the panic button.

Here are three reasons why.

One is that Boston has faced a tough schedule so far. The Cincinnati Reds made the playoffs last year and the Houston Astros just missed. Both of the Red Sox's opponents had winning records last year and are postseason contenders again this year.

Granted, that's not an excuse. Boston is capable of beating good teams and needs to do so if it wants to survive the AL East and reach the playoffs this year, but it's not like the Red Sox are losing games to the Chicago White Sox and Colorado Rockies.

Boston also began the season on the road, which is the second reason. The Red Sox typically play much better at home but struggle away from Fenway Park.

Look no further than last year, when Boston went 48-33 at home but 42-42 on the road, including the postseason. The Red Sox also struggled on the road out of the gate, losing four of their first five away games.

Speaking of 2025, that's the third reason. Boston also opened last year 1-4 in March but immediately turned things around once the calendar flipped to April, starting the month with a five-game winning streak and going 16-11 that month.

Accordingly, don't be surprised if the Red Sox follow a similar pattern this season. They have a lot of new players and guys in new roles, so it usually takes some time to settle in. Boston fans aren't known for their patience, but in this case, that's exactly what's needed.
