In an interview with Lorne Plant of STATE Champs! last spring, the Flint, Michigan native called his shot that the Wolverines would be the last remaining team at Lucas Oil Stadium on Monday, April 6, 2026.
That vision came to fruition on April 6 with the Wolverines holding on against No. 2 UConn inside Lucas Oil Stadium for a 69-63 win to bring the program's first national championship title back to Ann Arbor in nearly four decades.
"I envision myself winning a national championship next year at Michigan," McKenney said in 2025.
“I envision myself winning a national championship next year at Michigan.” That’s what Trey McKenney told Lorne Plant of STATE CHAMPS! during his interview for the Detroit Athletic Club Male Athlete of the Year last spring while at Orchard Lake St. Mary's.

McKenney played a key role off the bench for the Wolverines in their win over the Huskies, as he contributed nine points on 2-of-9 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds and an assist in 29 minutes of action, including a huge 3-pointer in the second half down the stretch.
The Wolverines victory on Monday gives the Big Ten its first men's college basketball national championship since Michigan State in 2000. It's also the second national championship in program history, with the last one coming in 1989.
The 6-foot-4 guard played in 40 games off the bench for the Wolverines in his freshman season. He averaged 12.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in Michigan's six wins in the Men's NCAA Tournament, with a postseason high 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the Wolverines' Sweet 16 win vs. Arizona.
McKenney will now serve as a building block for Michigan's attempt to win back-to-back titles next season, as he told the Detroit Free Press in Chicago at the Midwest Regional last weekend that he is returning to Ann Arbor for his sophomore season.
"Definitely planning on coming back next year," McKenney told The Detroit Free Press in Chicago before Michigan's Elite Eight game vs. Tennessee. "We're going to have a really talented team next year, I came in with a role this year and I think my role would definitely expand next year, so I'm definitely looking forward to coming back."
