"Chris Wright represents exactly what we were looking for a proven winner, a builder of programs and a leader who knows how to establish and sustain a championship culture," Alabama State athletic director Jason Cable said in a statement.
Wright's most recent stint was with Langston University, where he inherited a program that finished 1-27 during the 2021-22 season and led it to a 31-3 record in his first season as the Lions' coach. Over his four-year tenure with Langston, he complied a 121-21 record and two NAIA National Championship appearances. For his efforts in his first season, he won the 2022-23 NAIA National Coach of the Year.
"I am honored and excited to lead the Alabama State men's basketball program," Wright said in a statement issued by the university. "This is a proud institution with a rich tradition and a passionate fan base. We will build a program that competes for championships every year, develops our student-athtletes and represents this university at the highest level. Our expectation is to win and to win the right way."
Tony Madlock announced he was stepping down at the Hornets' coach on March 29, leaving the university to become the associate head coach for former teammate Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway at Memphis.
Alabama State followed up its historic 2024-25 season, in which it won the program's first NCAA Tournament game, with a dismal 10-22 record in 2025-26, 7-11 in SWAC play. The Hornets didn't survive the first round of the conference tournament.
