UNC transfer portal target chooses historic Big 10 program

All the talk of college basketball right now is transfer portal activity, with plenty guys still announcing their decisions to enter or next destinations.

UNC, which recently hired Michael Malone as its next head coach, is off to a slow portal start. North Carolina landed Virginia Tech transfer Neoklis Avdalas, a Top-20 portal player, with others sure to follow.

The Tar Heels will miss out on one target through, as Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell committed to Indiana on Wednesday.

A sophomore from Detroit, Sherrell would fill an immediate post need for UNC, which lost Caleb Wilson to an NBA Draft declaration. Henri Veesaar is also mocked in this year's draft, so there's no guarantee North Carolina has a starting center for next season.

Sherrell averaged 11.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game in his first season as a full-time starter for Nate Oats, who led his Crimson Tide to the Sweet 16. Now heading up to Bloomington, Sherrell is tasked with helping the Hoosiers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2023.

With Zayden High committing to South Florida and James Brown in the portal, the Tar Heels are officially down three post players from their 2025-26 season, which ended in a disappointing First Round exit. Malone currently has Juke Harris and Terrence Brown (no relation to James) on UNC's radar, but both are guards.

North Carolina still has several portal needs to address, but finding a big man needs to be near the top of their list. Think about how well the Tar Heels played with dominant big men last season, until injuries had other plans.
