The Philadelphia Phillies are going through something no team ever wants to experience. Coming into the season, there were very high expectations for Philadelphia, but that has quickly come to a halt. The Phillies are currently on the worst losing streak in baseball.
“The longest losing streak in baseball now belongs to the Philadelphia Phillies, who dropped their eighth straight and are tied with the Mets for the worst record in the National League at 8-16. At -50, the Phillies also have the worst run differential in baseball by 15 runs,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.
On Thursday, the Phillies saw their eight-game losing streak extend to nine games. Philadelphia hasn’t gotten off to a start this poor in a long time. Despite the struggles, there doesn’t appear to be any panic about firing manager Rob Thomson.
“Dave Dombrowski is concerned about what is going on with the Philadelphia Phillies, but he said manager Rob Thomson is not on the hot seat despite the team's seven-game losing streak. Dombrowski, the Phillies' president of baseball operations, instead is focused on the team's overall play during an 8-15 start this season,” ESPN wrote.
Obviously, players want to see a change in the win column, but that just isn’t happening right now. During a stretch where everything is going wrong, there is a lot of searching for answers. Even Phillies captain Bryce Harper doesn’t know how to respond to the skid.
“I can’t remember something like this in my career,” Harper said.
It’s a tough stretch for the Phillies, no doubt about it. If they continue to get caught up in the wrong emotions during this trying time, things could spiral quickly.
Harper is a veteran and knows how to motivate his teammates. He has led the Phillies to consecutive NL East titles, but there is a sense of uncertainty inside the clubhouse right now.
