Jake Reiner, son of the Rob and Michele Singer Reiner, addresses his parents’ “nightmare” murders in an emotional Substack post.
The eldest child of Rob and Michele described getting a call from his sister, Romy, telling him their parents had been killed.

“The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the west side was unendurable. My world, as I knew it, had collapsed. I was in a trance. The only thing I could focus on was that I needed to get to my childhood home. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to figure out what the hell just happened,” Jake wrote.
Jake continued by saying “nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly.”
“It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare,” he said. “I can’t even begin to put myself in my parents’ shoes, but one thing I keep coming back to is how frightened they must have been. They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them. They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”
Jake didn’t mention his brother, Nick, who has been charged with killing his parents, by name, but he said Rob and Michele “should be enjoying the rest of their lives peacefully while growing older together.”
“Instead, that was ripped away from them, from me, from Romy, and there was nothing we could do about it,” he said.
Jake went on to call his parents his “guiding lights” and “the foundation of who I am as a human being.”
“A lot of people don’t have the luxury of having the best parents, the best mom, or the best dad, but I did. The love they have for me, my brother, and my sister is truly unconditional. And the love they have for each other in their marriage is something I always looked up to as the standard of what a successful relationship looks like,” he wrote.
Jake didn’t address the allegations against Nick, but spoke lovingly about his relationship with both his parents.
Calling his mother his “confidant,” Jake said he “leaned on her brilliant perspective” and praised her for being “the engine, the backbone, and the heart of our entire family.”
He and his father, who directed such acclaimed films such as Stand by Me , The Princess Bride , and When Harry Met Sally, connected over sports and their shared love of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“We went to so many damn games. I’ll never go to Dodger Stadium again without feeling my dad’s presence and hearing his voice tell me why Shohei Ohtani should never bat in the leadoff spot,” he joked.
Jake ended his essay by saying the months following his parents’ deaths have been “horrendous.”
“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable. Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the centre of it,” he said.
Murders of the Reiners rocked Hollywood
The Reiners were found dead in their Los Angeles-area mansion on Dec. 14, 2025, the day after they attended Conan O’Brien’s holiday party the night before.
Rob allegedly told friends at the soiree that he was terrified of his own son.
According to the Daily Mail , Rob was heard saying he was “petrified” of Nick.
“I can’t believe I’m going to say this but I’m afraid of my own son. I think my own son can hurt me,” Rob allegedly said.
Before Rob and his wife were tragically killed, the parents brought Nick, who lived in their guest house, to O’Brien’s Christmas party where he and his dad allegedly got into an argument.
One attendee told the New York Times that “people seemed to be very aware of Nick’s history with drug abuse” and he was “hovering at the fringes of the informal gathering.”
Another party goer described Nick, who worked with his actor-director dad on the 2016 drug addiction drama Being Charlie , as looking “anxious and uncomfortable in a way that deeply unsettled them.”
The same day his parents were killed, Nick was arrested outside a gas station and charged with first-degree murder. He is currently being held without bail.
According to their death certificates, the Reiners died within “minutes” of receiving “multiple sharp force injuries” with a “knife” wielded “by another.”
Nick has entered a plea of not guilty and is expected back in court on April 29 for the scheduling of a preliminary hearing to determine whether there’s enough evidence for him to face trial.
According to the Associated Press , District Attorney Nathan Hochman still hasn’t decided whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty.
