Giorgi Mamardashvili officially joined Liverpool in 2024 but he didn't join up with the team until 2025. This has been his first season, then, and because of an injury, we do know how it's gone.
The goalkeeper has played 18 times in total, with eight coming in the Premier League. Alisson Becker's injury struggles have allowed Mamardashvili as lot more minutes than expected.
And the feeling in Italy is that Mamardashvili is set to be Liverpool's no.1 next season. The likes of Tuttosport claim that on the back of Alisson discussing terms with Juventus ahead of a possible move.
The Reds are entertaining the sale of one of their greatest players and instead focusing on Mamardashvili. A bold move.
However, the assumption there is that Alisson leaving would mean the Georgian takes over. That might not actually be the case and a new report from Goal suggests Mamardashvili is already getting replaced.
They claim Liverpool have expressed an interest in Manchester City star James Trafford. Trafford will almost certainly move this summer after just a year with his boyhood club - he'd signed as first-choice but City opportunistically signed Gianluigi Donnarumma and installed him as first-choice.
Thus anywhere Trafford goes, he'll want to be first-choice. That's his entire motivation right now and Liverpool simply must know this. The only chance you have of signing the goalkeeper is by making him your no.1.
Any desire to sign Trafford, then, is for that role. Liverpool's interest suggests they're already happy to replace Mamardashvili with someone new.
Giorgi Mamardasvhili: Situation Summary
Premier League Performance and Stats
As of 24 April 2026, Giorgi Mamardashvili has established himself as a reliable deputy at Liverpool during Alisson Becker’s injury absences. In the 2025/26 Premier League season, the 25-year-old Georgian has made eight appearances (688 minutes), maintaining a 67.5% save percentage and keeping two clean sheets. His underlying numbers include 27 saves and a 50% penalty save rate, though his distribution reflects a 71% pass completion rate. He also featured seven times in the Champions League before Liverpool's quarter-final exit to PSG.
Injury Update and Team Impact
Mamardashvili is currently sidelined after being stretchered off during the 2–1 Merseyside derby win on 19 April. While initially hospitalised with a deep knee wound, scans confirmed no serious structural damage. However, in a press conference on 24 April, Arne Slot revealed that recovery is taking longer than expected, ruling him out for "the upcoming weeks." With Alisson still a doubt for the weekend, third-choice keeper Freddie Woodman is tipped to start against Crystal Palace. Despite a contract running until 2031, Mamardashvili’s future remains a talking point as he prepares to lead Georgia at the 2026 World Cup this June.
