There’s always something during training camp that breaks the routine. A bad shooting drill. A random joke. Maybe a little friendly trash talk. For Sophie Cunningham, it just happened to be a full-blown country music superstar walking into the gym.

Yes, really.

In the middle of practice, the Indiana Fever suddenly had an unexpected visitor in Blake Shelton, and just like that, basketball took a backseat for a moment. Cunningham didn’t even try to hide it.

“I just lost all focus,” she said, laughing as she walked over to greet Shelton. “Stop it.”

Safe to say, practice wasn’t the priority anymore.

When practice turns into a fan moment

Shelton didn’t exactly sneak in quietly either. He showed up holding a custom Fever jersey with his name on it, instantly turning a routine workout into something closer to a meet-and-greet. Cunningham’s reaction set the tone. Big smile, disbelief, and zero attempt to play it cool. It was the kind of moment every athlete has at some point, even if they won’t always admit it.

This time, she absolutely did. And she wasn’t alone in enjoying it.

The whole gym felt it

Even Caitlin Clark got involved, welcoming Shelton with a clap as the team leaned into the surprise. At one point, someone joked that Shelton was officially a “Fever girl,” which honestly felt accurate given how quickly he fit into the scene. Head coach Stephanie White even told Shelton he could come back anytime, which probably tells you everything you need to know about how the visit hit.

For a team grinding through preseason reps, it was the kind of interruption no one minds.

Cunningham didn’t hold back

If there was any doubt about how much the moment meant, Cunningham cleared that up afterward.

“I don’t fangirl over anyone BUT @blakeshelton hands down the best,” she wrote on social media.

So yeah, distraction confirmed.

More than just a random stop

Shelton was in Indianapolis promoting his Ole Red restaurant and live music venue, which is set to open in the city in the near future. But for a few minutes, that business trip turned into a crossover moment between country music and the WNBA. And it worked.

For Cunningham, who is returning after an injury-shortened 2025 season, the moment added a little extra energy to camp. For the Fever, it was a reminder that even in the middle of a serious preseason grind, there’s still room for something fun. Because sometimes, the biggest moment at practice has nothing to do with basketball.

Sometimes, it’s just about who walks through the door.
