Panvel Municipal Corporation Yet To Form Public Welfare Committee Despite Return Of Elected Representatives

Panvel, May 7: Despite the return of elected representatives to the Panvel Municipal Corporation after nearly three-and-a-half years, the much-awaited Public Welfare Committee for monitoring civic healthcare services is yet to be formed.

The Maharashtra government has directed civic bodies to revive various healthcare committees, including Patient Welfare Committees, Public Health Committees, Women’s Health Committees and Village Health, Nutrition and Sanitation Committees, with the aim of improving healthcare delivery and ensuring better public participation in health services.
Officials said the proposed Public Welfare Committee in Panvel will oversee the functioning of civic healthcare facilities, including “Aapla Davakhana” clinics and urban health centres, while also helping citizens access government healthcare schemes.
Proposal sent for approval
According to civic officials, the proposal for constituting the committee has already been forwarded by the Health Department to the Municipal Commissioner for approval.
“The proposal regarding the formation of the Public Welfare Committee has been sent by the Health Department to the Municipal Commissioner for approval,” said an official.
Committee to include corporators and health officials
The committee is expected to include health officials along with local corporators, who will be able to raise citizens’ grievances and discuss measures to improve healthcare services in their respective areas.
Officials stated that the committee’s responsibilities would include ensuring free medicines and blood tests for poor and needy patients, strengthening essential medical services and improving the overall quality of public healthcare facilities.
