WARMINGTON: Another day, another brazen shooting targeting Toronto's Jewish community

· Toronto Sun

A wild shooting of three people in front of a synagogue Thursday night is being investigated as a “hate crime” and has once again sent Toronto and its Jewish community into a state of terror and fear.

This is yet another terror attack on Toronto Jews.

For the second time in a week, a replica gun was fired on Jewish people from a car.

This time it was a shooting at people outside the Congregation Chasedei Bobov at 3703 Bathurst St. – a synagogue in the Wilson Ave. area. One of the three people standing in front of the synagogue was struck and suffered minor injuries.

Sources say police did appear to be questioning somebody connected to this case. Police have not confirmed this and said they have no information to release on an arrest.

What police have said is there was a “shooting at Bathurst St. and 401 area at 10:49 p.m. May 7” and “three people standing in front of synagogue were shot at from vehicle w/ a replica firearm – one person struck and suffered minor injuries.”

Toronto Police also say this “is being investigated as a hate-motivated offence.”

Things are out of hand in Toronto and the GTA.

‘Cannot become normalized’

“It is open season on Jews,” said Meir Weinstein of Israel Now.

It’s not even a secret.

“This is terrorism,” said Richard Robertson, B’nai Brith Canada director of research and advocacy. “When you attack an identifiable group to install fear because of an ideology view that is terrorism full stop.”

Robertson said “something needs to give here” because “the increased frequency of antisemitic attacks, are not acceptable, can’t be tolerated and must stop immediately.

“This is not normal, and it cannot become normalized,” said the Centre of Israel and Jewish Affairs. “Individuals were targeted outside a Jewish institution and subjected to intimidation and violence because of who they are and where they were.

CIJA added: “Governments, law enforcement, and civic leaders must treat these incidents with the seriousness they deserve and ensure those responsible are identified and held accountable.”

Disturbing trend in shootings

There have been three synagogue shootings, countless vandalism at Jewish-owned businesses, and last week, exactly one week to the day, there was a similar shooting to this one.

As Toronto Police reported, “on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Toronto Police were made aware of an assault that took place in the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue West area” where “the victims were visibly identifiable members of the Jewish community” and a “a suspect, who was in a vehicle, discharged a replica firearm at the victims, described as an Orbeez-type gun.”

Police said “the victims sustained minor injuries and the suspect fled in a blue SUV.”

The Sun was told that a vehicle fitting this description was seen in the vicinity of the latest shooting.

Witness Avi Grinberg told reporters at the scene Friday he saw someone shooting a “BB gun” and one of the members of his synagogue was shot in the arm.

“There is a national crisis going on and it is being ignored,” B’nai Brith CEO Simon Wolle said of a 145% increase in antisemitic attacks.

“Obviously things are out of control. Is our governments at all levels waiting for a catastrophe to happen?” Jewish community advocate Marty York asked. “How can there be another attack on a Jewish institution? Why are antisemites being allowed to flourish? How many times can we say enough is enough?”

This disturbing antisemitic incident comes at the same time as police arrested a teenager this week in the shootings of two synagogues and when there are many questions surrounding the execution-style shooting of a Jewish man in a nearby park in which a man has been arrested.

Police have not revealed a motive in the murder, but they do say the motivation in the shootings of synagogues and its attendees is hate.

Things are out of hand.
