The NHL made its final judgment on the penalty Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy took in the final seconds of the Game 6 loss to the Buffalo Sabres in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The suspension is punishment for a game misconduct that McAvoy committed with just 90 seconds remaining in the season.

McAvoy slashed Sabres' forward Zach Benson after the offending party slew-footed the Bruins captain in the final seconds of a blowout season-ending loss.

Benson received a two-minute minor for tripping, but no other discipline was issued by the league.

McAvoy took the opportunity to plead his case in person at the league office, to no avail.

Boston will be without the leader of its defense for the first six games of the 2026-27 season.
