Tyler Brown is accused of unloading 50 to 60 rounds of bullets from an assault-style rifle as he walked down Memorial Drive on Monday afternoon. Cambridge cops received a 911 call from Boston authorities, who said there was someone acting erratically and had a firearm in their possession, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan later told a press conference, per NBC Boston .

Both Cambridge police and Massachusetts State Police arrived on scene to find a man unloading his gun at stopped vehicles. During the fury of bullets, two men were struck and rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

People fled cars in the chaos

A Marine carrying a legal gun and a state police trooper also arrived on scene as people jumped from their cars in hopes of not being hit by the gunfire, the New York Post reported.

The Marine and trooper walked towards the gunman with weapons drawn, shooting him several times. Cops treated the shooting suspect at the scene and he was transported to hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

A motorist told CBS Boston he stopped his car and crouched inside it as bullets hit his radiator and the headlight of his co-worker in front of him.

“Got out, walked up to the car in front of me to my co-worker to see what was going on. Saw the dude in the street lifting [the gun] up at me,” the unnamed driver told CBS Boston .

“I dipped back into my car and ducked behind my dashboard. My buddy got out, he ran for it. State trooper pulled up directly on the side of me, got out, got behind his car right in front of my driver’s side mirror, got in the gunfight with him.”

Suspect once shot at Boston cops

Brown has a lengthy rap sheet spanning two decades, including a 2020 incident where he shot 13 rounds at Boston cops. For that incident, he was sentenced to five to six years in prison, but was released after a few years.

The accused was slated to visit his parole officer on Monday after the latter became concerned about the suspect’s well being, Boston 25 News reported.

Cops tried to find Brown at his Dorchester, Mass., home, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Brown is facing a number of charges, including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Ryan noted there’s no indication whether Brown targeted anyone specific on Monday.

“This incident occurred, as I said, on a very busy part of the afternoon, with lots of people there, clearly people’s lives were at risk,” Ryan said during the press conference. “What happened today cannot stand.”
