Honkers, Royals secure top seeds in Class B baseball West Super Region

May 17—PLATTE, S.D. — Paths to the South Dakota Class B baseball tournament are known, and in the West Super Region, the roads go through Platte and Winner.

Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian/White Lake locked up the No. 1 seed in the super region and will host a four-team bracket that also includes Rapid City Christian, St. Thomas More and Chamberlain/Kimball/Lyman. No. 1 PGDCWL opens against No. 8 CKL at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in Platte, followed by No. 4 Rapid City Christian and No. 5 STM. The winners will then square off at approximately 6 p.m. for a state qualifier position.

This year's Class B tournament is set for May 25-26 at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings.

On the opposite side of the West Super Region bracket, Winner/Colome plays host to Belle Fourche, Gregory County and Hot Springs. The second-seeded Royals are up against No. 7 Hot Springs at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Winner, with No. 3 Belle Fourche and No. 6 Gregory County to follow. The victors meet for a place in the eight-team state tournament field.

In the South Super Regional, Freeman/Canistota/Marion earned hosting privileges as the No. 2 seed. The Sticks will play No. 7 Canton in the opening round at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, in Freeman, while the other first-round game pits No. 3 Dakota Valley against No. 6 Beresford Area. A state tournament berth will be on the line in the game between the two winners at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 4 seed Bon Homme and No. 5 Parkston/Ethan are paired up on the top side of the South Super Region bracket, with the winner to play either No. 1 Vermillion or No. 8 Scotland/Menno for a state tournament berth. That quadrant opens play at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Vermillion, with the state qualifier game at 7 p.m.

Rounding out the Mitchell-area programs still playing, No. 7 seed McCook will play No. 2 Dell Rapids, the two-time defending state champions, at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Dell Rapids as part of the Metro Super Regional. That portion of the bracket also includes No. 3 Lennox and No. 6 Baltic. Meanwhile, No. 8 seed Hanson/Bridgewater-Emery will travel to Humboldt to face No. 1 West Central at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will play either No. 4 Sioux Falls Christian/Sioux Falls Lutheran or No. 5 Tri-Valley for a place in the state tournament.

In the North Super Regional, the top seeds are No. 1 Madison/Chester/Oldham-Ramona-Rutland and No. 2 Sisseton/Britton-Hecla/Webster Area.
