Now, the Ottawa Senators' pending free agent has decided to put off retirement for another year and keep playing in the NHL.

"I was told Monday that the 38-year-old forward, an unrestricted free agent on July 1, has decided he wants to come back and play another season," The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun reported on Tuesday.

In his exit interview with local media at the end of the season, Giroux also said if he comes back, he'd like to keep playing in Ottawa.

His contract is up, so Giroux is heading for free agency, but potentially his decision to return also includes a knowledge that the Senators might want him back.

Regardless, it's cool news for hockey fans who have followed Giroux's career for a long time.

He has played 19 NHL seasons between the Philadelphia FlyersFlorida Panthers and now the Senators.

That includes 1,345 games, 379 goals, 786 assists and 1,165 points.

Giroux played exactly 1,000 games in Philly with exactly 900 points.

He has played 327 games and counting for the Senators with 242 points. That included all 82 regular season games this year with 14 goals and 35 assists (49 points).

Giroux is set to turn 39 years old in January.

And while the clock is ticking on his career, there's still some sand left in the hourglass.
