Shaevitz, Bloomington South girls track make it over regional hurdles

BLOOMINGTON — The 100 hurdles and the 4x100 relay bring out the best in Adriene Shaevitz.

The 300 hurdles? Well, sometimes it brings out her lunch.

There's no doubt the Bloomington South senior is giving everything she's got in that last tough stretch of hurdles. The pain and exhaustion she felt afterward are worth it, however.

The last part of the season has seen her make big drops in the 100 hurdles, and the South girls track regional Tuesday, May 26 was no exception, blasting to a career best and school record 13.84 to win that event. Only three people have run faster than that at state since 2022.

"She is right up there with the top hurdlers in the state," South coach Jill Rensink said.

Later, the IU-Indianapolis signee started off the 4x100 relay on a meet record-setting spin around the track in 47.85. And then she made sure to get everything out of herself with a 46.55 for second in the 300s to book another slot at state.

"I get really anxious and it tends to get the best of me," Shaevitz said. "But I was just really stressed but I pushed through. I like how it's a good mental challenge for me push myself and finish through that 300 hurdles and know it's going to be tough at the end, but I have to get it done anyway."

And the extra work is making things easier for her in the 100s.

"I think it definitely has helped," Shaevitz said. "Compared to last year, I think my base issue was the 5-10 hurdle stretch I would lose momentum. But I think the 300s this year has definitely helped me keep that momentum all the way through. Which I'm excited about."

Shaevitz' titles were two of eight the Panthers earned on the night while piling up 139 points to top Columbus North (110) for the team title.

In Megan Grabowski's hey-day, seldom did the former South speedster have to look over her shoulder to see if anyone was catching up to her. A decade later, it's a different story.

The 4x100 team she anchored that set the school record of 47.61 has some company after Shaevitz, Helena Cutshall, Alaina Bunnell and Violet Hall flew to a regional record 47.85, just .24 from the school record.

"I never thought we would sniff that and we are so close to it," Rensink said. "Those four are so determined to get it. Hopefully next week, it falls their way."

"We've just been practicing our handoffs a lot lately," Shaevitz added. "We've been focusing on keeping the really fast feet all the way through, so we're really hoping to break that record. I think we have it."

South swept the relays, taking the 4x400 in a meet record 3:56.46 and the 4x800 in 9:17.05. Lexi Kollbaum and Mary Asplund led off both races and Ellie Barada finished both.

Barada and Kollbaum went 1-2 by themselves in the 800 and 1,600. Barada (5:01.80) and Kollbaum (5:02.60) cruised through the later before picking it up in the 800, Barada winning in 2:08.31 and Kollbaum next in 2:13.04. Martinsville's Laura Barco (2:15.19, 5:08.15) chased them to third in each race.

"Lexi and Ellie, four races tonight, that's a huge workload for one night," Rensink said. "But they're focused on the team and what we need to do as a team.

"We talked about the importance of just getting through the 16 but also coming back and putting down a really hard 8 to make sure you secure a place in that fast heat of the 800. They ran a pretty conservative 4x8 as well because the schedule is a beast."

The Panthers also got another strong 3,200 from Jasmine Martoglio (10:40.98) and Hall had a career best 25.07 to win the 200. Bunnell was fourth in the 100 by .01 in a career best 12.51.

Freshman Reese Robertson is turning her volleyball hops into an asset on the track and has proven to be a quick learner under assistant Jay Rensink. She's set career bests the past two weeks in high jump, hitting 5-4 at sectionals and then 5-5 at regional to gain a spot at state with a third place finish.

"I didn't really expect it," Robertson said. "At the beginning of the season, I was only jumping 5-foot, 4-10. But I hope I get higher at state, maybe 5-6 or even higher. I'm excited for it."

State will take place on Friday, June 5 at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

1-2-3 champs for Edgewood

Edgewood had three champions and a third place team finish (56 points) to brag about. That's the best results the Mustangs have seen at regional since 1999 when they took second with 59 behind the throwing prowess of Stacy Martin.

"Great night," Edgewood coach Kyle Walter said. "We felt like going in, those three events we had a good shot at and then to get five individuals in. I couldn't have asked for more."

Field events carried the way again as sophomore Mikayla Prater didn't waste any time taking charge with a 14-foot PR of 141-7 on her first effort in discus, which held up. That big bang came after another one in warmups that probably got her adrenalin rushing, throws coach David Whittemore said.

"I was really happy about it," Prater said. "I think, like my coach said, it was because I hit the post first on my warmup. It's OK because then I threw really well. I haven't had a PR in while, so it was a good feeling."

Competing in throws run in the family. The school records set by Martin and postseason marks set by North's Hadley Lucas set are one thing that drives her.

"It's definitely something I look up to," Prater said. "I really want to be like them, for sure, one day."

Elle LaRoche was the high flyer in the pole vault, the only one to reach 10-9. Hannah Crain went 11:02.63 for second in the 3,200 and Kelsey Davis secured her first spot at state by taking third in the 300 hurdles in a career best 46.66.

Meanwhile, senior Macey Crider had the opportunity to get a busy day on the track over with before she had to focus on shot put. She turned in a 12.84 for sixth in the 100 and anchored the 4x100 (Davis, LaRoche, Langley Hill) to another school record of 49.61, but that was good only for fourth.

Crider was in second after she got her first three attempts in, then hit a 39-1 in his first effort of the finals to vault into first place by a little over a foot.

"Last week, she missed out on the warm-ups because of when they started it," Walter said. "We had a little better plan this time. At state, she won't have to worry about all that running around."

Feagans feeling it for North

Sophomore Lucah Feagans showed the mettle she's gained just over the past few weeks.

First, she hung tough to knock 1.1 seconds off her career best 400 time with a 58.86 for second place by a mere .12.

"When she finally broke 60 seconds a couple weeks ago, that's a confidence boost right there," North coach Justin Helmer said. "Barely did it (59.98), then 59.95 at sectional. I think the big difference here is, she got real competitive over the last 50 meters with (Columbus North's Miley McClellan, who won in 58.74).

"She just really wanted to win the race. She talked this week of, 'I don't want to just qualify. Last year, I qualified, but this year I have a chance to win regionals. I want to win.' That's the mentality she had going into it. She just closed really well."

Then with the season on the line in the 4x400, she came through for the Cougars. As the anchor, she took over the baton about 10 yards in back of Owen Valley, but made that up halfway through her leg and led North to a third place finish in a season best 4:05.62, leaving the Patriots fourth at 4:07.59, but still thrilled at the fact they had topped a school record from 1987 (4:08.9).

"We knew tonight it was going to be a close race to get into the top three," Helmer said. "We ran well through three legs, but Lucah had to run her down and she did."

The Cougars, fourth with 49 points, are also sending their 4x800 team to state after a third place finish in 9:29.62 that is No. 2 all-time at the school.

And sophomore Delilah Kilbride, who got stuck at 8-6 at sectional in pole vault and needed a call-up to complete again, took advantage, getting back to her season high of 10-0 to take third.

Eastern Greene's 4x800 relay (10:19.71) broke the school record set in 2023 (10:22.44).
