Updated PSL play-off fixtures after Milford shock Cape Town City

· The South African

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has officially rescheduled the remaining 2025/26 promotion/relegation play-off fixtures following Milford FC’s 1-0 victory over Cape Town City FC on Tuesday.

Now the pressure shifts to Magesi FC, who enter the battle knowing they can no longer afford a slow start in a competition where every single point can decide survival or heartbreak.

The Premier Soccer League’s promotion and relegation play-offs remain one of the most unforgiving competitions in South African football, linking the Betway Premiership with the Motsepe Foundation Championship in a tense three-team mini-league.

HOW THE PLAY-OFFS WORK

The system is simple, but brutal. While the Motsepe Foundation Championship winners earn automatic promotion and the bottom club in the Betway Premiership is relegated automatically, the final top-flight place is settled through the play-offs.

That mini-league features the Premiership side that finished 15th together with the second and third-placed clubs from the National First Division.

Each team plays four matches in a home-and-away format, with the club finishing top of the standings securing a place in the next Betway Premiership season.

Goal difference often becomes decisive, while the pressure is intensified by relaxed squad regulations that allow clubs to field their strongest available line-ups without certain developmental restrictions.

2025/26 PSL PROMOTION/RELEGATION PLAY-OFF FIXTURES

All matches kick off at 15:00.

  • 26 May 2026: Cape Town City FC 0-1 Milford FC (Athlone Stadium)
  • 03 June 2026: Milford FC vs Magesi FC (Richards Bay Stadium)
  • 06 June 2026: Milford FC vs Cape Town City FC (Richards Bay Stadium)
  • 10 June 2026: Magesi FC vs Cape Town City FC (Seshego Stadium)
  • 13 June 2026: Magesi FC vs Milford FC (Old Peter Mokaba Stadium).

Remaining in the Betway Premiership guarantees television revenue, sponsorship exposure, league grants, and commercial stability. Relegation often forces clubs into painful rebuilding projects, budget cuts, and uncertainty.

PSL chairman Irvin Khoza has repeatedly defended the format, arguing that it keeps the league competitive and commercially attractive, even though critics believe top-flight clubs usually enjoy a significant advantage due to experience and resources.
