Notre Dame lacrosse star makes NCAA history with Tewaaraton Award
· Yahoo Sports
It wasn’t how Notre Dame star defenseman Shawn Lyght wanted his season to finish, but individually, he had a historic season.
The 6-foot, 3-inch and 200-pound junior has had a decorated Irish career, and on Thursday night he made NCAA history as the first defenseman to win the Tewaaraton Award, the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. He joins Pat Kavanagh in 2024 as the only winners of the award in Notre Dame program history.

The Irish have had multiple other players as finalist for the prestigious award, as Lyght won his second-consecutive William C Schmeisser Award as the nations top defender. He was also a first-team All-ACC performer, and won the conference defensive Player of the Year award as well.
He’s now also been a two-time USILA first-team All-American, and still has another season to continue to make Notre Dame history. Lyght should once again be the defensive catalyst for the Irish next season, as they’ll look to win yet another national championship after falling just short this season.
