Central Railway continues its Environmental Awareness Campaign in the run up to World Environment Day-2026 with various activities

Ahead of World Environment Day 2026, Central Railway initiated a comprehensive environmental campaign from 15th May 2026, across all five divisions and workshops, mobilizing thousands of railway officials, staff, passengers, and citizens. Themed on sustainability, waste management, and reduction of single-use plastic, the campaign showcased Central Railway’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community participation.
The comprehensive day-wise activities undertaken from Day-9 to Day 12 are detailed below:

Day 9 (May 23, 2026)
Mumbai Division: Launched a strict monitoring drive across station vendor stalls to reinforce the single-use plastic ban. Vendors were actively counseled to switch to biodegradable alternatives.
Bhusaval Division: The Central Railway Bharat Scouts and Guides performed an impactful street play (Nukkad Natak) on Platform No. 5 at Bhusawal Railway Station to promote nature protection.
An awareness rally was mobilized at Nashik Road Railway Station focused on waste segregation, urging passengers to maximize the use of the on-site Plastic Bottle Crushing Machine (PBCM).
Station Management and staff at Akola station directly interacted with commuters to advocate against plastic use.
Nagpur Division: A climate change seminar was conducted at Ajni, to educate staff on ecological preservation.
At Balharshah staff campaigned extensively for passengers to "Say No to Plastic Bags" and opt for Jute bags.
Pune Division: Organized an environment conservation and protection awareness drive at Pune Station in collaboration with local NGOs.
Solapur Division: A new Plastic Bottle Crushing Machine (PBCM) at the Solapur Coaching Depot was inaugurated. Cotton bags were distributed to contract staff to phase out single-use plastics.
Health and Engineering officials conducted rigorous water quality inspections and cleaned refilling points at Solapur, Wadi, Pandharpur, and Kalaburagi stations.
Matunga Workshop: Hosted a "Say No to Plastic" seminar teaching employees a crucial packaging disposal technique—cutting liquid pouches (milk, oil, curd) partially so the small cut piece remains attached to the main packet, preventing microplastic fragments from entering the ecosystem.
Sanpada Workshop: Conducted checking and deep-cleaning of internal water refilling stations to minimize worker reliance on single-use plastic bottles.
Traction Machine Workshop (TMW), Nashik Road: Organized a technical seminar at prioritizing industrial waste segregation, total elimination of single-use plastics, and energy optimization during traction machine overhauling.
Day 10 (May 24, 2026)
Mumbai Division: Inspected station water refilling points to ensure absolute hygiene and operational functionality. Station Public Announcement (PA) systems were heavily utilized to advise commuters to transition to their own reusable water bottles.
Bhusaval Division: Teamed up with the Rotary Club of Bhusaval to host a specialized joint seminar addressing the critical issue of "Reducing Textile Waste."
Pune Division: Directed awareness campaigns toward the dual goals of promoting personal water bottles and adopting the partial-cutting methodology for flexible plastic packaging.
Solapur Division: The Cultural Team performed a moving Nukkad Natak at Pandharpur Railway Station, effectively conveying messages on reducing pollution, water conservation, and protecting nature.
Day 11 (May 25, 2026)
Mumbai Division: Continued mass passenger sensitization via station PA systems regarding plastic restrictions. Simultaneously, railway service providers were trained to replace virgin plastic products with recycled alternatives in catering operations. Furthermore, RO water purifiers at the S&T Workshop in Byculla were thoroughly serviced and filters replaced.
Nagpur Division: The division's cultural team staged a high-impact street play in the Dome Area of Nagpur Railway Station (Platform No. 1)
Solapur Division: The cultural team presented an inspiring Hindi street play titled "Jahan Hai To Jaan Hai" at Kalaburagi Railway Station, driving home key points on tree plantation, water conservation, and public cleanliness.
Day 12 (May 26, 2026)
Mumbai Division: Executed interactive anti-pollution workshops with school children and hosted creative street plays in partnership with local NGOs. Staff also held targeted sensitization sessions for vendors regarding partial pouch-cutting to mitigate microplastic hazards.
Bhusaval Division: The Central Railway Bharat Scouts and Guides extended their street play outreach to Shegaon Railway Station to target floating passenger populations.
Passengers at Nashik Road Station were systematically guided toward eco-friendly disposal by utilizing the station's plastic bottle crushing infrastructure.
Pune Division: Organized an environmental drawing competition at the Basic Training Centre (BTC) within the Ghorpadi Coaching Complex to engage staff and young trainees.
Central Railway remains dedicated to leading sustainable infrastructure reforms and appeals to the traveling public to actively assist in keeping railway premises free of single-use plastics.
