A 44-year-old man has died after being ejected from a garbage truck on Hwy. 401 in Pickering on Sunday.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said officers responded to a single-vehicle rollover collision on the westbound collector lanes of Hwy. 401 heading into Port Union Rd.

Police said the 44-year-old driver from North York was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The passenger of the garbage truck sustained minor injuries.

Schmidt said the westbound express lanes were open to traffic, while the collector lanes were closed for police investigation and cleanup. The OPP expected all lanes re-open by 3 p.m.

Anyone witnesses of the collision are asked to call the OPP at 416-235-4981.

Woodstock man awaiting trial in fatal Brampton crash charged again

A Woodstock, Ont. man already awaiting trial for a fatal Brampton crash is facing new stunt driving charges after he was recently nabbed speeding in Mississauga.

In a news release issued by Peel Regional Police on Sunday, police said they spotted a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed near Winston Churchill Blvd. and Argentia Rd. Around 1 p.m. on May 23.

Police said a traffic stop was conducted and 20-year-old Mitchel Hunter was charged with stunt driving, speeding – 102 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone, fail to surrender driver’s licence, and drive motor vehicle contrary to emissions regulations.

Hunter also received an immediate 30-day driver’s licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.

The new charges come while Hunter is already awaiting trial on criminal charges stemming from a fatal crash in Brampton in November 2024.

In that instance, police previously charged him with dangerous driving causing death, and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.

Cops probing assault in west end

Toronto Police are investigating an assault in the city’s west end that left one person with serious cuts on Saturday night.

Cops said the incident happened near Old Weston Rd. and Rownstreet Ave. shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Police said one victim was transported from the scene to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries after suffering “large cuts” during the assault.

Police said they believe there was a group of about seven males at the scene at the time of the assault. Cops said the males fled in a dark-coloured sedan.

Pedestrian struck, killed

A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a vehicle in the city’s York neighbourhood near Old Park Rd. And Eglinton Ave. W. overnight.

Toronto Police said a 23-year-old man was operating a Honda Accord westbound on Eglinton when an unidentified male pedestrian was crossing from the north side of Eglinton to the south side.

Cops said the pedestrian was struck by the vehicle and the driver remained on scene.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene.
