Walk-offs to win a championship are nothing unusual when it comes to baseball at any level. From the professional ranks all the way down to Little League, large numbers of games are decided by a play on the final pitch.

However, on Friday afternoon, Pleasant Grove (TX) won the UIL Conference 4A D1 championship in the most unusual of ways.

Down one entering the final frame against Calallen, the Hawks tied the game and then had runners on the corners with only one out.

Senior Spencer Browning was up to bat and faced a 1-1 count. Calallen's pitcher delivered a pitch high in the zone and instead of hitting the catcher's mitt, it bounced off his right shoulder.

The ball flew away, and senior Walker Wright bolted home to score the game-winning run. His teammates behind home plate quickly mobbed him as they celebrated.

Pleasant Grove finished its season with a record of 39-4. The win marked their fifth baseball state championship in school history and first since 2020. The Hawks managed to get the win despite only getting two hits, with Calallen pitcher and Texas State commit Collier Carroll striking out 11.

The win was also a bit of revenge for the Hawks, who lost to Calallen 5-3 in last year's championship game.
