Over 20 Johannesburg suburbs will be hit by 12-hour water outage

· The South African

Johannesburg Water will interrupt water supply to a large stretch of Region A suburbs on Monday, 9 June 2026, from 9:00 to 21:00, as part of planned maintenance to commission new water infrastructure. The shutdown will last a full 12 hours, leaving thousands of households, businesses, and schools across some of Johannesburg’s busiest northern suburbs without running water for most of the working day and into the evening.

The utility released the notice on 5 June 2026 as part of its daily water supply system status updates, giving residents just four days to prepare for the disruption.

Why is the water going off in the Johannesburg suburbs

The interruption is not the result of a burst pipe or emergency; Johannesburg Water is deliberately shutting down supply to commission new water infrastructure in the area. The utility says the work will ultimately “improve service delivery and continuity of water supply” for affected residents, framing the short-term inconvenience as a necessary investment in the network’s long-term reliability.

Infrastructure commissioning of this scale typically involves pressure testing, valve switching, and the integration of new pipework into the existing supply system, work that cannot be safely carried out while water is flowing through the network.

Which suburbs will be affected

The outage will cut across more than 20 suburbs in Region A, covering a wide band of the city’s northern corridor. All streets within the listed areas will be affected, with no partial exemptions. The full list of affected areas includes:

  • Carlswald, Erands, Summerset and Noordwyk – all extensions
  • Sagewood Extensions 18, 19, 20, 23 and 24
  • Crowthorne all Extensions
  • Kyalami AH, Kyalami Gardens, Kyalami Estates, Kyalami Ridge, Kyalami Heights and Kyalami Hills – all extensions
  • Barbeque Downs all Extensions
  • Vorna Valley all Extensions

Where residents can collect water

Johannesburg Water will set up alternative water supply points across the affected areas to assist residents through the outage. The utility has confirmed the following collection points:

  • Noordwyk Spar and Crowthorne Spar
  • Beaulieu, Corner Lourens & Papenfus Drive
  • Kyalami Corner and Kyalami Prep School
  • Barbeque Downs – Shakespeare & Dickens, and George & 15th Road
  • Midway Mews Spar
  • Sasol Garage on Waterfall Drive
  • Mushroom Farm Shopping Centre

Residents are encouraged to store enough water by 9:00 on Monday for drinking, cooking, and sanitation. Filling bathtubs, large containers, and pots the night before is a practical way to buffer against the 12-hour gap.
