Ariel Bertolotti painted the small shelter on Route 33 in Firmat, in the province of Santa Fe, featuring, among others, Argentine football icons Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.
Inside the sports-themed shrine to San Fulbo ("Fulbo" is a colloquial term for football in Argentina), there is also an image of the "Saint of penalty kicks."
"The idea was to do something together," said Bertolotti. "football is what unites us most."
The artist invited people from the town, located about 100 kilometers southwest of Messi’s hometown of Rosario, to continue painting the bus stop and to stick texts or images inside the booth. "I'm calling on the community to get involved," said Bertolotti.
According to media reports, the artist had already created a mural in honour of former Argentine defender Walter Samuel prior to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Bertolotti's works are mainly themed around football and music.
Messi is set to play at a record sixth World Cup when Argentina start their title defence on Tuesday against Algeria, with Austria and Jordan their other opponents in the group stage.
