Golf Digest reported on June 11 that Mickelson, 55, is no longer a member at The Farms Golf Club near San Diego because of an alleged interaction that happened in the spring, when an employee reportedly rejected Mickelson's overture and immediately reported him to the club's supervisors. The outlet said Mickelson was "told to vacate the premises" in the middle of a golf round.

In a statement to Golf Digest, The Farms said, "Following a staff member report of member misconduct, the club provided immediate and ongoing support to the staff member, conducted a thorough independent investigation of the incident and took decisive action. This individual is no longer a member of The Farms Golf Club. To protect the safety and privacy of our staff and member, we are unable to speak further on the matter.”

Following Golf Digest's report, a spokesperson for Mickelson said, “Any misunderstanding has been cleared up. Phil continues to attend to a family health matter and is uncertain when he will be able to return to professional golf," in a statement to the outlet.

PEOPLE contacted a representative for Mickelson on Friday, June 19, but did not immediately hear back.

Mickelson didn't play in The Masters this year after announcing in a statement on social media in April that he'd miss the tournament due to a family health matter. "Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter. I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year," Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, wrote.

He also missed multiple events during the LIV Golf season tending to the "family health matter,” he said.

According to the AP, Mickelson is no longer eligible to compete in the U.S. Open, which began Thursday, June 18, and runs through Sunday, June 21, because he's run out of exemptions.

The veteran golfer — who shares three children with his wife, Amy — did not share any further information about the nature of the health matter at the time, nor did he specify what family member was affected.
