2027 NBA title odds: 2 teams that deserve higher odds

· Yahoo Sports

The New York Knicks won their first NBA Championship since 1973 less than a week ago. It’s never too early to look towards next season, as betting odds were released for the 2027 NBA Champion on the same night the Knicks won.

There aren’t too many surprises, but one line that stuck out was the now reigning champion, the New York Knicks. The Knicks have the fourth-highest odds to win the 2027 NBA Title. On sportsbooks such as DraftKings and FanDuel, the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Boston Celtics all have better odds of winning the NBA championship next season.

The most notable update from the odds release is the Knicks holding the fourth-highest odds, but there are some other changes that should be addressed as well.

The New York Knicks should have 2nd highest odds to win NBA title

Despite now being the reigning NBA Champions, the New York Knicks are being somewhat doubted by the sportsbooks. The main issue is that the Boston Celtics have better odds of winning the title than the New York Knicks. The Celtics had a first-round exit this past year and have roster questions looming with a potential Jaylen Brown-Giannis Antetokounmpo trade.

Either way, Boston has a ton of question marks heading into free agency. Even with a Giannis trade, who knows how healthy he could stay throughout the season?

The other reason the Knicks should have the second-highest odds is that they should be favored over whichever team is projected to lose the Western Conference Finals. The Knicks have been slept on before, including all of this past postseason. This isn’t anything new for them.

The Oklahoma City Thunder should be favored to win the 2027 NBA title

This isn’t anything against the San Antonio Spurs, who are going to be an elite team for years to come. The Oklahoma City Thunder would likely have beaten the Spurs if Jalen Williams and AJ Mitchell had been healthy. OKC took the Spurs to seven games without two of their three best ball-handlers.

Having a full season of healthy Jalen Williams changes the dynamic for the Thunder. Plugging in an elite two-way wing, who’s been All-NBA before and can add more spacing for the Thunder in the playoffs.

Oklahoma City will likely have some different pieces on the roster next year. Lu Dort, Cason Wallace, and Isaiah Hartenstein all have contract questions heading into this offseason. The other side of this offseason is that OKC still has a ton of assets, including two first-round picks in the upcoming NBA Draft.

OKC could either trade up to draft another blue-chip piece for the future or use assets to acquire an established wing, such as Trey Murphy III of the Pelicans.

What the sportsbooks got right about NBA title odds

The order may be incorrect, but the sportsbooks got the top four teams right in terms of the best odds to win the title. Boston should be better than a first-round exit, whether they have Jaylen Brown or Giannis Antetokounmpo next to Jayson Tatum.

The Spurs and Thunder have the best young cores in the NBA. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama are still two of the three best players in the world. Both teams have incredible second and third options: Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams for OKC, and Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle for the Spurs.

The Knicks have a clear two-year window to keep competing for NBA titles with their current core. Jalen Brunson is a clear top-five player on the planet.
