The Boston Celticsreportedly tried trading Jaylen Brown for Giannis Antetokounmpo, and now there are reports that he could be available for other suitors.
This was reportedly the second time the Celtics have offered Brown for a superstar player, the other time being in 2022 for Kevin Durant. ESPN's Brian Windhorst noted that other teams could call about Brown now that the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes is over. Brad Stevens did not shut down the idea of a trade in a press conference on Tuesday, but acknowledged Brown's importance to the Celtics.
"Jaylen Brown's a big part of us," Stevens said. "I'm never gonna predict the future. But every indication, everything I think about over the past few years, has been about building around those guys, right? And so, obviously, you never know. But at the same time, the one thing I want to make very clear is how valued he's always been. He's been amazing, he's been an amazing teammate, great person to be around. And whether that run ends 10 years from now when he retires or before, there's a lot to celebrate. We have a great relationship and an open relationship where we talk about everything. I don't want to predict the future, but I look at it as this is our team."
What happens with Brown is certainly something to watch in the next few weeks. The Celtics did not trade him on draft night, but that does not mean he's in the clear. There seems to be a belief that Brown wants to lead his own team and is ready to work separately from Jayson Tatum. However, their former teammate Marcus Morris thinks Jaylen Brown will retire with the Celtics unless he truly wants to leave Tatum's side.
"I think Jaylen Brown retires as a Celtic," Morris said on "First Take" on Wednesday. "Unless Jaylen Brown wants to get his own team. I don't think it's about the Celtics at this point. I think it's Jaylen Brown recognizing, 'Do I want to keep doing this Batman and Robin thing with Jayson Tatum?'"
Brown and Tatum won a championship together in 2024 and have been to the NBA Finals twice together. By every metric, they are a successful duo and work well together. Stevens noted that he thinks Brown and Tatum can still win a championship together in his press conference on Tuesday, so it seems like it's up to Brown at this point. If he wanted to, he could force a trade and refuse to sign an extension.
