Common sense has returned to college sports. Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, but there was some good news on Thursday. The Virginia Tech Hokies and West Virginia Mountaineers announced their rivalry would be renewed on the hardwood, beginning this November. The Hokies and Mountaineers will play over the next three years, with WVU hosting in 2026, VT hosting in 2027, and the 2028 game scheduled in Charleston, West Virginia, between the two longtime rivals.

The Hokies and Mountaineers have played 79 times over the years, with West Virginia holding a 49-30 edge. The two border rivals were conference foes in both the Southern Conference and the Big East before VT entered the ACC in 2004.

These teams last played in December 2015, with WVU defeating Virginia Tech 88-63. Buzz Williams was in his second season as the Hokies head coach, while the legendary Bob Huggins was head coach of the Mountaineers.

That game was the last of a four-game series that began in 2012, with West Virginia winning three of the four games.

This is good news for fans who want this rivalry renewed. WVU football coach Rich Rodriguez recently advocated for some of the region’s schools to play more frequently, including VT and West Virginia.

The Hokies have a new athletic director, so hopefully, he can make that happen sometime soon.
