Lumenocity and lights at the end of the winter tunnel

· The South African

As winter continues so does dark mornings. Exercise routines take strain, evening outings decline and, for those (like me) involved in the tourism and hospitality industry, money pockets are light, and life possibly as dull as the dreary days.

What to do? Wake up warm memories and hold on to the highlights… Like that balmy evening in April, when I was one of 17 000 people through the gates at Africa’s first mayor light and immersive art experience: Lumenocity.

Tickets were affordable and the venue was fantastic – the Old Company’s Gardens.

Also, in a world were early ending events are becoming more popular in Cape Town it was strange and refreshing to attend and outdoor event closing at 23:30.

Believe it, you could truly spent hours absorbing the talents of artist such as The Magpie Collective, Water Dixon and Walter Ritson & Brad Baard. Plus, there was enough delicious food from local vendors to enjoy a three course meal under the trees as part of the Lumenocity experience.

First Light, then after winter Life

Gareth Hadden, founder of Lumenocity said he was “chuffed” about the figures for the first event.

But more importantly, we had zero cell phone theft, zero acts of violence and one medical incident when a person from the Woolworths van cut his finger. Also, over 600kg of waste was washed and recycled.

Now – except for establishing Lumenocity as something in its own right, “something weird and wonderful and something that is its own thing” Hadden has a few big ideals. Or enormous ideas. Like videomapping straight onto Table Mountain. He told The South African that there is five year plan for the event in Cape Town, and that it will fall on the same weekend every year.

Other than than the aim is to create a community of like minded light maestros and a space where proteges can learn to video map, use touchdesigner, tell stories and use interactive pieces.

And then there was also an unconfirmed event planned for the end of August or beginning of September in Johannesburg.

Spread the Love

With prospects such as these the long month of July is warming up.

And if prospects are not enough one could always plan a coastal winter weekend.

Until we get to play in the garden again.
