Turmoil in Punjab Congress: Is Charanjit Singh Channi pressuring party high command?

Internal rifts within the Punjab Congress appear to be deepening, with reports suggesting that former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is mobilising supporters behind the scenes. Speculation is rife that Channi is using proxy voices within the state unit to mount pressure on the party's central leadership.

The alleged strategy is aimed at creating enough internal friction to signal that bypassing him could lead to organisational instability. By positioning loyalists to highlight his support base and challenge the existing arrangement, Channi is reportedly attempting to push the high command to project him as the party’s undisputed Chief Ministerial candidate. The development follows a series of missile strikes targeting commercial shipping, prompting maritime authorities to raise the regional threat level to "severe". Tehran has rejected the newly established "southern corridor" along the Omani coastline and has directed commercial vessels to avoid Omani waters and use its designated central route.

Wayanad Tunnel landslide: Kerala halts construction, orders probe and greenbelt audit

A tragic landslide at the Kalladi twin-tunnel construction site in Wayanad, Kerala, which claimed the lives of five migrant workers, has forced the state government to suspend all construction activities.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan ordered a halt to the project and announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victims’ families. Rescue teams continued searching for missing labourers on Wednesday. A state minister described the disaster as "man-made", following which officials launched a detailed techno-legal investigation.

The project contractor, Dilip Buildcon, defended its position, attributing the collapse to unprecedented monsoon rainfall. However, district administration officials said the company had been warned on June 27 to stop hazardous work due to severe environmental risks.

Sources said a high-level committee comprising senior state bureaucrats is being formed to conduct a comprehensive safety and environmental audit of major infrastructure projects near sensitive green belts.
