Joplin 11s log win over Springfield; Webb 10s claim district title

CARTHAGE, Mo. — After dropping a 6-5 game to Springfield in the opening round of the 11-and-under Little League District 2 opener in Carthage on Monday, the Joplin Little League All-Stars (3-1) got their revenge with a 13-5 win over Springfield (3-1) Thursday in Carthage.

The Joplin victory set up a winner-take-all Game 3 for the district title, set for 6 p.m. Friday. Results were not available at press time.

On Thursday, Springfield jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning, but Joplin plated five in the bottom of the second to take a 6-3 lead. Springfield managed to get a run across in the top of the third, but Joplin answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to make it an 8-4 game. Joplin added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth and gave up just one run in the top of the sixth to claim the win.

Four Joplin All-Stars logged multiple hits. Cameron O’Dell was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs, Jackson Ballard went 2 for 3 with two runs, Brody Barley finished 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, and Kolton Jones was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.

Barley gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits as Joplin’s starter. He struck out seven and walked four in four innings.

Webb City 19, Carthage 0

Webb City’s Jude Dalton drove in six runs and Corvin Ruehle threw a complete-game one-hitter in a 19-0 win over Carthage in the championship game of the 10-and-under District 2 tourney on Thursday at Webb City’s King Jack Park.

Dalton finished 2 for 2 with 6 RBIs and two runs. Owen Dill was 2 for 2 with three runs and three RBIs, and Jett Weston finished 3 for 3 with three runs and a pair of RBIs. Webb City plated seven in the opening frame, nine in the second inning and three in the third.

Ruehle struck out eight and walked none in the three-inning run rule-shortened game.

Major Allen claimed Carthage’s lone hit — a second-inning single to third base.

With the win, Webb City advances to the state tourney, which begins next Thursday at Sunny Jim in Joplin. Webb City wrapped up the title with a clean sheet at 3-0, outscoring opponents 44-5.

Webb City 18, Joplin 0

Webb City pitchers Rayden Snyder and Camden Blackford combined for a perfect game as the Webb City Little League posted an 18-0 win over Joplin in the opening game of the 9-and-under District 2 tournament on Thursday in Springfield.

Webb City plated seven runs in the first inning and added 11 in the third frame. Patience at the plate paid off for Webb City as it garnered 13 walks.

Wyatt Mock led Webb City at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Webb was slated to play Springfield at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Results of that game were not available at press time. Joplin will face the loser of that game at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Joplin 25, Springfield 17

In a game that saw 69 total hits and 42 runs, it was the Joplin 8-and-under All-Stars that emerged victorious with a 25-17 win over Springfield in their District 2 game Thursday at Aurora.

Both teams logged six runs in the first inning. Joplin added another four in the top of the second and 3 in the top of the third. Springfield made it a 13-8 game with a pair of scores in the bottom of the frame. Both teams added another six runs each in the fourth inning to make it a 19-14 game. Joplin plated six more in the top of the fifth and held Springfield to three in the bottom of the frame.

With the win, Joplin advanced to Friday’s championship game against Webb City (2-0). Joplin would need to beat Webb twice to claim the district title. Results were not available at press time.
