Urgent warning for all South African yoghurt lovers

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced the recall of several SPAR-branded yoghurt products sold across South Africa after a production fault was found that could affect the products’ quality and potentially cause consumers to become ill.

- SPAR Fat Free Yoghurt
- SPAR Low Fat Yoghurt
- SPAR Double Cream Yoghurt
- SPAR Indulge Double Cream Yoghurt
- SPAR Active Drinking Yoghurt
According to the NCC, SPAR notified the regulator that a machine malfunction during production caused some yoghurt containers to “blow”, resulting in changes to the products’ taste, smell and appearance.
The retailer warned that consuming the affected products may cause an upset stomach.
Products sold nationwide
The recalled yoghurt products were sold in SPAR stores across South Africa from 15 June 2026.
Consumers should check the packaging for the following dates:
- Sell-by date: 9 August 2026
- Use-by date: 12 August 2026
Only products matching these dates are included in the recall.
Consumers urged not to eat affected yoghurt
The NCC has advised anyone who purchased the affected products not to consume them.
Instead, customers should return the yoghurt to their nearest SPAR store, where they will receive either a full refund or an exchange.
Product recalls are issued as a precautionary measure to protect consumers when a manufacturing or quality issue is identified. The NCC encouraged shoppers to check their refrigerators for any of the affected products and return them as soon as possible.
