Some time may have passed, but the connection between Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young and receiver John Metchie III has not.

Kassidy Hill of Panthers.com, in a new piece from Friday, profiled the relationship between Young and Metchie—who played together at the University of Alabama in 2020 and 2021. The two have been reunited this offseason, as Carolina signed the 25-year-old wideout to a one-year deal in March.
And although they hadn't shared a sideline since those Crimson Tide days, the two still seemed to be on the same page during spring workouts.
"They're fun to watch," fellow wide receiver David Moore said of Young and Metchie, via Hill.
"Once the receiver and the QB get that connection, that connection can't be broken," continued Moore. "It doesn't matter if you play with him for three years, two years, and then don't see him again for however long; that's his case. Once you get the timing of that QB, he doesn't slack off, and you don't slack off, and y'all keep doing it, then y'all will get back together, and it'll be like clockwork."
Metchie was Young's go-to target during his Heisman Trophy-winning campaign. He notched a team-leading 92 receptions for 1,142 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 2021.
The Panthers are now Metchie's fourth NFL squad, as the 2022 second-round pick had previously chalked up stints with the Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets. Sticking on in Carolina may prove to be difficult for the fifth-year vet—who will have to compete with Moore, Jimmy Horn Jr., Brycen Tremayne and Dan Chisena in the backend of the wide receiver room.
So on top of being fun, his familiarity with Young could prove rather valuable.
