Love triangle ends in fatal shooting in KZN

A man was shot dead after he confronted his former girlfriend and her current boyfriend at an informal settlement in Blackburn, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday morning.
The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre received a call for assistance at about 5:35 am after reports of a shooting at a one-room rented home.

When reaction officers arrived, they found a man lying outside the dwelling with a gunshot wound. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

According to information gathered at the scene. The man, believed to be in his mid-30s, went to his former girlfriend’s home and repeatedly knocked on the door.
The woman opened the door while her current boyfriend remained inside. The deceased allegedly told the boyfriend that he was “not there for him”, but the situation quickly escalated into an argument.
He then allegedly demanded items he claimed to have bought for his former girlfriend. She denied having any of his belongings.
The current boyfriend told reaction officers that he was lying on the bed when the man allegedly pulled out an Okapi knife and tried to stab him.
Fearing for his life, he said he retrieved his licensed firearm from beneath his pillow and fired a single shot in what he claimed was self-defence.
The man staggered outside the dwelling, collapsed and died at the scene.
RUSA officers recovered an Okapi knife and one spent cartridge casing.
Police investigate
Police established that the deceased was well known in the area.
Investigators also established that he had allegedly left his pregnant partner at home before travelling to confront his former girlfriend.
Police have taken over the investigation and will determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
