The Washington Commanders' chase to add another wide receiver ahead of the 2026 regular season could be at a crossroads heading into training camp.

After veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs challenged the league to point to a secondary wide receiver currently better than the available free agent, the market for Diggs could take shape closer to the starting of training camp after Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that "at least five teams" have checked in on Diggs -- including Washington.
Fowler pointed to the DMV as one he's watching given both the Commanders and Baltimore Ravens have been tied to the Good Counsel grad and University of Maryland product through the offseason, though Fowler also noted that Washington is looking for "more of a speed option at this point."

One could make the argument that Diggs fits the profile as a speedy wide receiver despite generating momentum as a route technician through his NFL career. Yet after coming off a 1,000 yard 2025 season after suffering a torn ACL that cut his stint with the Houston Texans short in 2024, Diggs will look to silence critics ahead of signing with a hopeful playoff contender. Kansas City has also been viewed as a sensible landing spot with the Chiefs looking to add to the wide receiver room, though they've also been linked to a potential reunion with Tyreek Hill, coming off major leg injuries suffered in 2025.
Yet maybe as notable as the nugget on Diggs was a short note on Brandon Aiyuk after Fowler admitting he doesn't envision the former San Francisco wide receiver to ultimately land in Washington.
It would mark a sensible direction for Washington to turn given Aiyuk has provided more distractions than answers on social media for nearly two months, even admitting last week that his antics won't change if he latches on to an NFL team in 2026. For a Commanders organization that has worked to minimize distractions all offseason with hopes of putting a five-win season behind them, it's been increasingly questioned whether Aiyuk fits in Washington and the locker room.

Former and current players have gradually become more outspoken critics of Aiyuk with some even questioning whether he plays football again, while others like Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young said, "I worry for him" in a media appearance over the weekend. Add in the fact that Aiyuk has yet to play since week seven of the 2024 season, the continued saga has posed more questions than answers even after, at one point, appearing to be the most obvious acquisition candidate of the offseason.
While the chance to pair quarterback Jayden Daniels with one of his closest friends and former college teammate could have also addressed arguably the last question about the Commanders' roster ahead of 2026, Washington could turn to other options in a limited market given Deebo Samuel, Tyreek Hill, Sterling Shepard and Deandre Hopkins are among the players currently unsigned ahead of training camp. Or, of course, Washington remains content with its current wide receiver room as they showed signs of being earlier in the offseason.
