What's the World Cup final weather forecast for New York New Jersey Stadium?

For the World Cup final game, there is a significant chance for thunderstorms in East Rutherford, NJ, where the the NYNJ Stadium sits.

AccuWeather's forecast calls for partly cloudy day with a 88% chance of rain and a 53% chance of precipitation. "Rain gear may be needed for the soccer match; nearby lightning may delay the match," its forecast says. Chance for rain is higher in the morning than in the afternoon and evening.

The culprit is a low pressure system moving into the region from the Great Lakes area, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), Upton office.

The NWS anticipates a slight chance for thunderstorms on Sunday. Its forecast calls for higher chances of thunderstorms on Saturday, rather than Sunday.

"There is a lower chance, but it's still a chance," said NWS meteorologist Bryan Ramsey. If thunderstorms develop on Sunday, chances are likely in the late afternoon into the evening, he said.

When it comes to temperatures, the high is expected near 87 degrees, according to the NWS. High humidity levels are expected given the partially sunny skies, high temperature and damp conditions in forecast.

Do soccer games get canceled because of rain? What are FIFA rules?

Seeing soaking wet players on the pitch is normal in soccer. Rain is not a cause for cancellation unless the field is so waterlogged that it makes it hard for the ball to roll.

Lightning, on the other hand, would delay or cancel a game immediately.

FIFA's 2026 protocol establishes that any game will be immediately halted if lightning is detected within an 8-mile radius of the stadium. If that happens, the game would be delayed for 30 minutes. If another lightning strike is detected within that period, the 30-minute timer resets.
