MI's big reset: Jasprit Bumrah or Tilak Varma to lead as franchise weighs major calls

Mumbai Indians' leadership group is set to convene in England next week for a comprehensive review of the 2026 IPL season, with several major decisions expected to be taken.

According to The Times of Indiathe management will go through head coach Mahela Jayawardene's detailed post-season report as part of this process. While much of the recent attention has centred around dressing room tensions and speculation surrounding a possible Hardik Pandya trade, Jayawardene's own future with the franchise has quietly slipped under the radar.

Things haven't quite gone to plan under his watch. Mi had to remain contend with a fourth-place finish in 2025, which gave way to a rough ninth-place showing in 2026. Whether he sticks around for another season is anyone's guess at this point, particularly with the franchise clearly looking to wipe the slate clean and get back to winning ways.

Hardik Pandya's trade talks will be discussed

There's already a considerable interest surrounding a potential Hardik Pandya trade, with clarity expected to emerge only once the franchise completes its season review.

Whatever stance Mumbai Indians take heading into these talks will go a long way in determining how any deal eventually plays out.

Pandya isn't the only one whose name is doing the rounds either as reports suggest another former India skipper has also caught the eye of rival franchises when it comes to potential trades.

The MI captaincy dilemma: Bumrah or Tilak?

MI need to finalise their captain for the 2027 season. The central debate appears to be between handing the reins to Jasprit Bumrah or investing long-term in the leadership development of young batter Tilak Varma, who has also been steadily climbing India's own leadership pathway.

Bumrah presents himself as a strong contender, having remained largely ever-present for the franchise. Tilak, while undoubtedly talented, has been inconsistent with the bat so far, with some within the game viewing him as still developing as a T20 batter.

That's led to a worry that handing him the captain's armband right now could do more harm than good to his development.

Bumrah, meanwhile, has already had a brief run at leadership, stepping up to captain the side against Punjab Kings during IPL 2026 after both Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav were ruled out.

He has also led the Indian team to victory over Australia in Perth during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

Bumrah offers stability, but Tilak represents the bigger bet

If MI end up choosing Bumrah as the captain, it will be a short-term fix but a more pragmatic one given his consistency and proven leadership credentials at the international level.

But it risks sidestepping a more important long-term question: who leads Mumbai Indians once his playing days start winding down?

Tilak's inconsistency is a legitimate concern, but leadership roles have historically helped some young players find greater focus and accountability rather than becoming a burden.

If Mumbai Indians are serious about rebuilding a sustainable core, gradually grooming Tilak alongside a settled system, rather than repeatedly leaning on senior stopgaps, might ultimately serve them better.

Moreover, they do have the option of promoting Suryakumar Yadav as the captain. He is going through a lean patch, but very few people doubt his credentials in T20 cricket, and if he puts in the hard yards in the nets, a revival of form is just a matter of time.
