It's been a weird stretch of days for Tommy Kahnle.

The veteran right-handed relief pitcher was recently designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox, setting off a sequence of events.

First, Kahnle had to pass through waivers unclaimed, which he did.

Then he had a decision: Report to Triple-A Worcester or use his veteran right to become a free agent. Kahnle chose the latter.

But then in free agency, Kahnle evidently didn't find a better option. He has returned to the Red Sox.

The news came out Tuesday that Kahnle has signed with Boston and will report to Worcester after all:

Kahnle will be hoping to turn things around and get back to the majors. He had an 8.00 ERA in eight outings this season with Boston.

He's a long-time successful reliever with a nasty changeup, particularly in stints with the Yankees and Tigers.

Now, Kahnle will have to prove he still has it while pitching at Worcester.

If he does that, he may get a return trip to Fenway Park after this bouncing trek down to the minor leagues.
