Hamilton Police said a passerby spotted the man – now identified as Taranpreet Singh Sidhu – partly submerged in water in a sewage culvert that drains into Lake Ontario at the north end of Fruitland Rd. around 8:15 a.m.

The 29-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Following the initial investigation, detectives have confirmed Mr. Sidhu’s death is the result of a homicide,” police said in a statement released Thursday. “Investigators are not releasing the cause of death at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.”

Victim likely killed elsewhere: Cops

Police said investigators are “confident” Sidhu was not killed in the location where he was found. “Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death,” police said, explaining investigators are working closely with Peel Regional Police, who have provided investigative resources to assist the Hamilton Police homicide unit.

“Investigators have conducted an extensive video canvas in the area where Mr. Sidhu was located and continue to review surveillance and digital evidence while interviewing witnesses to establish his movements leading up to his death,” police said. “While detectives continue to pursue all investigative avenues, they are not prepared to release information regarding the vehicle believed to have been used to transport Mr. Sidhu.”

Police said Sidhu immigrated to Canada from India in 2022. Since arriving in Canada, he lived in Brampton and Halifax while working as a truck driver.
