Max Eberl striving to get summer business done early at Bayern Munich

One of the biggest challenges for any sporting director is balancing patience with urgency during the transfer window. Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl made it clear that, if given the choice, he would much rather have his work completed before preseason even begins.
“I’m also someone who finalizes his squad planning early. I managed to do that in Mönchengladbach, in Leipzig, and incidentally also here at FC Bayern. Everything was done by mid-July, before the start of pre-season training. When Kingsley Coman then asked to leave, which we ultimately granted, we had to fight for Nicolas Jackson until the very last day. That wasn’t ideal, but these things can happen. With the contract extension with Upa, we can now go into the summer transfer window with a clear plan,” Eberl told Sport1 journalist Stefan Kumberger (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

Eberl’s philosophy is one that many coaches would undoubtedly appreciate. Having the bulk of a squad assembled before preseason allows players to build chemistry, learn tactical concepts, and establish roles well before competitive matches begin. It also reduces the uncertainty that can linger over a dressing room when key players are still linked with moves deep into August.
At the same time, Eberl acknowledged that football rarely unfolds exactly as planned. Unexpected transfer requests, like Kingsley Coman’s departure, can force clubs to react quickly, creating a domino effect that extends well into the final days of the window. His example of pursuing Nicolas Jackson until deadline day illustrates how even the best-laid plans can be disrupted by changing circumstances.
The February extension for Dayot Upamecano appears to be another important piece of that planning process. Rather than entering the summer with uncertainty surrounding one of the club’s key defenders, Bayern Munich can now focus its attention on strengthening other areas of the squad — which, by the way, is already in motion with the acquisitions of attacking midfielder Ismael Saibari and left-back Nathaniel Brown.
If Eberl gets his way, Bayern Munich’s biggest transfer stories this summer will happen sooner rather than later. That would allow Vincent Kompany to begin preseason with a settled group, giving the players more time to prepare for what the club hopes will be another successful campaign.
