Yamamoto Gem Leads Dodgers to Series Win in First Leg of Doubleheader

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto hurled a complete game to help the Dodgers on their way to a series win in Yankee Stadium.
The Dodgers claimed an 8-2 victory over the Yankees, exploding for five runs in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach in the first game of their doubleheader Sunday.

Yamamoto Shines
Yamamoto got off to a hot start to the game, retiring each of the first nine batters he faced. The first of the two runs he allowed came in the fourth inning, when Trent Grisham Jr. hit a solo home run, and the other came in the eighth, when Anthony Volpe drove in Jazz Chisholm with a single . Yamamoto ended the game with a line of nine innings pitched, four hits, two earned runs and seven strikeouts.
The right-hander bounced back well from his last outing, which came against the Arizona Diamondbacks before the All-Star break. During that outing, he allowed six runs in as many innings in a loss.

The Dodgers scored first in the game, as Shohei Ohtani hit a one-run double to score Tommy Edman in the third inning. Freddie Freeman stepped up two batters later, and drove Ohtani in with a single.

Grisham’s home run made the score 2-1, but the Dodgers restored their two-run lead in the fifth inning through Andy Pages. Edman found his way on base to kick off the inning, and Andy Pages blooped a double into shallow right field to score him.

The game remained 3-1 until the eighth inning, when the Dodgers broke the game open. After Mookie Betts led off the inning with a strikeout, Max Muncy and Kyle Tucker found their way on base with a walk and a single, respectively.
Teoscar Hernandez hit a ground-rule double to score the first run of the inning before Dalton Rushing walked to load the bases. Tommy Edman hit a single to score two more runs for the Dodgers, and Ohtani followed it up with a single of his own to make the score 7-1.
Freeman drove the final run of the inning in with a sacrifice fly.

The Yankees stole one back in the eighth inning, but it didn’t make much of a difference as the Dodgers secured the win. LA has the opportunity to sweep in the second game of the series, which begins at 4:20 p.m. PT.
