The Miami Heat are pursuing LeBron James, and it could be getting down to crunch time. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup over and a decision getting really close, the Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Philadelphia 76ers appear to be the favorites. So, what is one Heat insider predicting for James’ next landing spot?

Five Reasons Sports Network’s Ethan Skolnick predicted that James will sign with Miami, as said in a Sports Illustrated article. The prediction wasn’t based on any inside intel from Miami or James’ camp. However, it does illustrate the belief that James could return to South Florida if the decision is based on the pure basketball fit.

So, why should the four-time NBA champion return to Miami? There are plenty of reasons that make sense for James.

Why LeBron James should sign with the Miami Heat

If James is making his decision based on winning and familiarity, the Heat should be at the top of the list. With Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, James wouldn’t be forced to carry the load defensively, allowing him to be one of the NBA’s best playmaking forwards. After losing Tyler Herro and others, Miami has a real need for James’ playmaking abilities.

The Heat lack a true ball handler outside of Antetokounmpo, and James would be an excellent fit. In fact, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported on NBA Today last week that other teams recruiting James believe Miami is the best fit for him as well. It is easy to understand why. The 41-year-old superstar would be able to control the offense, which wouldn’t be the case with any other team.

Miami isn’t done adding to the roster. Pat Riley is on record saying the roster needs more shooting. The Heat have been connected to Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson, which would be an outstanding fit. A lineup consiting of James, Antetokounmpo, Adebayo, Thompson, and Andrew Wiggins would be amazing.

James would have the ball in his hands, creating a potent fast-break team with unlimited defensive potential. Throughout the entire process, the Heat have made the most basketball sense for James. Plus, the four-time NBA champion has familiarity with the Heat. Specifically, head coach Erik Spoelstra and Adebayo from the Olympics. However, it comes down to James ‘ priorities for the 2026-27 NBA season.

Does James want to form one of the best teams in the NBA or go home to write another chapter in his Cleveland storybook? Neither would be the “wrong” decision, but James has an opportunity to create a very special situation in Miami.
